The Hitlerjugend was having much the same problem at the village of Rocherath, as described by Willi Engel, a Panther platoon commander:

I sensed disaster as I was expected to act against the elementary rules of combat, that a built-up area should be bypassed if at all possible without the security of accompanying infantry… I could survey the main street, the knocked-out panzers were a distressing picture … at that moment a single panzer approached the command post, suddenly, only about one hundred metres away, it turned into a flaming torch.
